Math is an important part of our day and the goal in the Full Day Kindergarten program is to provide rich problems and real connections to life. As a large class we continually talk about how to make decisions fairly and we frequently take votes and ensure that everyone has expressed their opinion. Throughout the Full Day Kindergarten program (both JK & SK years) we include the following math strands in our instruction:
- Number Sense and Numeration
- Measurement
- Geometry and Spatial Sense
- Patterning
- Data Management and Probability
Our classroom creates opportunities for our students to solve real, meaningful math problems and also provides them with many activities and choices to engage with math in a way that is stress free and at their level. We want our students to be fearless when it comes to math and to embrace all the concepts taught when they are ready so providing various levels of activities throughout the day allows the children to feel empowered and engaged mathematicians! Here is a description of what each math area focuses on and some examples from our classroom.
Number Sense and Numeration: counting, identifying numbers, understanding they have an order and some simple addition and subtraction skills.
 |
| Here is a great example of number sense. The children have ordered the foam numbers in the correct sequence starting from 1 all the way through 10. This was done purely on their own and all through play! |
Measurement: measuring length, mass and height using terms that are simple such as long, short, tall, more, less.
 |
| During a teacher directed activity the children were able to identify items that were heavier and lighter using a scale. Here they placed each object under the correct word. |
 |
| Here Lyla, while working at the writing centre, found crayons that she described as: 1 crayon that is Short, 2 that are the Same and 1 that is Long. |
Geometry and Spatial Sense: learning about 2 and 3 dimensional shapes. We also look at the position of objects (over, under, beside, behind and in front of).
 |
| A number of students working together created this house using 3 Dimensional blocks. They built a kitchen, living room and bedroom. The house fits quite a few people! |
Patterning: create and identify simple patterns such as blue, yellow, blue, yellow. We've noticed in our class that our students LOVE patterning!
 |
| Here we are making simple Halloween patterns! Black Cat, Witch, Black Cat, Witch. |
Data Management and Probability: we will learn to sort, classify and organize information into groups such as colour, size, what is the winner because it has the most votes, etc.
 |
| We are sorting teddy bears by colour. The fun part is that first we have to find them in the bin of Magic Foam (Shaving cream)! |
