Science and Technology

The main goal in the Science and Technology portion of our learning is to allow the students the opportunity to question, investigate and explore anything that interests them about our natural world. It is always hands on, through play and we let the students lead depending on their interests or questions. Many times our Science and Technology work turn into our inquiry focused activity because sometimes one simple question sparks the curiosity of many other students and we all work together to find out as much as we can! Throughout the months of October and November our class was focused on learning as much as we could about Pumpkins! Below are some examples of what we did with our learning:

We cut Pumpkins and pulled out the seeds and pulp! We then counted all the seeds inside. We had 131 seeds in one pumpkin and 129 seeds in another! It was a lot of counting., Phew!
We then took our seeds and planted them to see if they would grow. We learned that its not the pumpkin growing but the seed. From the seed will grow a plant called a vine.

We tested a pumpkin to see if it would float or sink. Prior to testing it out, we took a class poll to see what the students thought - will it sink or will it float? We found out that it floats! It floats because a pumpkin is mostly hollow.
Our seeds kept growing and growing!

We all got a chance to feel the slippery inside of the pumpkin and talked about how it felt to touch it. We used words like cold, slimy, yucky and gooey.
